Having boys takes months off your life. Then why on earth, I ask, do parents so obviously prefer them? This was true in my family, true in the families of virtually all my friends who have kids of both genders and my boyfriend told me it was true in his family, as well. This appears to span cultures and generations -- it was always apparent in every country in which I have ever lived. Parents just like their boys better. I guess there is some irony in the fact that having those boys shortens their lives.
